  76. GENERAL INFORMATION
  77.  
  78. MasterMind Typing cuts work to about a quarter of any
  79. alternative for learning to touch-type.  The magic is
  80. MasterMind's sensitive way of adjusting repetition for your
  81. progress.  It reads your mind.  In Phase 3, MasterMind
  82. enables you to dazzle friends with eloquent recitations,
  83. while you perfect your typing or for pleasure.

  85. For teachers supervising groups, MasterMind Typing is simple
  86. because mastery by everyone is intrinsic.  There is no
  87. grading.  Specific advice and a printable form for student
  88. records are in the file WhyHowMM.evy.  It is among the
  89. original files, not installed in the MasterMind Typing
  90. directory.  WhyHowMM.evy also explains the science underlying
  91. MasterMind, probably interesting to any user.

  93. Documents in .EVY format are readable and printable with an
  94. Envoy viewer.  As of mid-1996, a free viewer is downloadable
  95. as follows.  In CompuServe, GO PCVENJ, choose
  96. Libraries|TaskingSoftware|Download and enter filename EDVWIN;
  97. or do the equivalent with WinCIM.  In America OnLine, choose
  98. GoTo|SearchSoftwareLibraries and specify keyword EDVWIN.  For

  107. PRINTING README.TXT
  108.  
  109. Unless you have our printed manual, it is useful to print the
  110. complete form of README.txt (about fifteen pages, that is,
  111. larger than the VENDINFO abridgment you are reading now). 
  112. Under DOS, if you scroll the printing instructions onto your
  113. screen, you may key PrintScreen or Shift+PrintScreen to print
  114. just that much.

  116. We recommend printing via Notepad of the Windows Accessories,
  117. because it will paginate.  In Notepad, choose File|Open and
  118. specify the file as, for example,
  119.      A:\README.txt
  120.      or
  121.      C:\MMTYPE\README.txt
  122. If neither A: nor C:\MMTYPE is the location of README.txt,
  123. substitute the <drive>:\<path> that you have provided.

  126. File|Print.  When you exit from Notepad or any editor, please
  127. do NOT save changes.

  138. KEYBOARD COMPATIBILITY
  139.  
  140. MasterMind Typing self-adapts to various symbol layouts if
  141. Windows identifies the symbols with single-byte codes as
  142. usual.  Keyboards served include U.S., Dvorak, European,
  143. Arabic etc.  The Dvorak layout increases typing speed for
  144. English about 30% by putting the more common keys in easier
  145. reach.  If unsure whether MasterMind Typing will teach a
  146. keyboard of interest, please try it.  The speed of learning
  147. with MasterMind, unlike other tutors, makes it practical to
  148. learn multiple keyboards.

  150. U.S. keyboards have two keys in the upper corners bearing
  151. symbols that are unimportant for writing in English.  The
  152. equivalent keys can be alphabetic in Europe, where keyboards
  153. place them differently.  Because the usual use of these keys
  154. is for European languages, MasterMind Typing teaches the
  155. European locations.  If your physical keyboard is U.S.-style
  156. but you configure Windows for a language other than English,
  157. MasterMind Typing can misdirect you to one or two places
  158. where you have no key:  the lower-left corner or the right
  159. end of the home row.  Then, the usable keys will be in an
  160. upper corner instead.  With larger alphabets, the European
  161. keyboard is better not merely for MasterMind Typing but also
  162. because it makes the keys easier to reach.

  164. Under Win3.x and NT, changing the keyboard via
  165. Main|ControlPanel|International|KeyboardLayout also changes
  166. the MasterMind Typing lessons to correspond.
  167.  
  168. Under Win95, the comparable procedure is Start|Settings
  169. |ControlPanel|Keyboard|Language|Properties|KeyboardLayout. 
  170. There are separate choices for keyboard language and keyboard
  171. layout.  Presumably, one should make the two consistent. 
  172. Win95 allows one to "Add" a keyboard from its original
  173. installation disk if needed.  With a multi-keyboard setup,
  174. the Win95 task bar has a button at the right end to change
  175. keyboards quickly.

  177. Keyboard change affects phase 1 lessons mainly.  Because
  178. MasterMind Typing uses English for phases 2 and 3, those
  179. lessons now only serve alphabets based on Latin.  We would
  180. welcome inducement from local publishers to translate for
  181. other languages.

  184. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
  185.  
  186. MasterMind Typing will put appropriate instructions on-screen
  187. as you use it.  If you wish, a mouse click on a PRINT button
  188. will send the instructions of interest to your printer.

  190. Please use your mouse to set up a lesson.  Within a lesson,
  191. though, the mouse is inoperative and you use keys only.  To
  192. revert from any current condition, one keys <ESCape>.
